Taipei Dangdai Art & Ideas, presented by UBS and organised by The Art Assembly, will take place at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, from 10–12 May 2024 (with a VIP Preview and Vernissage on 9 May). Spotlighting the diverse art scene and established art market in Taipei, the fair will present world-class gallery presentations for regional and international collectors, the public, and art lovers alike, alongside expansive cultural activations across the city running in tandem with Taipei Dangdai. As the fair enters its fifth iteration, Taipei Dangdai has established itself as a leading destination for cultural exchange and a platform to introduce Taiwan to international visitors. 

For the first time, Taipei Dangdai Art & Ideas will present a curated exhibition within the fair co-hosted by the Ministry of Culture. Titled "Before Thunders: An Exhibition of Taiwanese Artists" the exhibition focuses on the work of a dozen largely mid-career artists selected by four curators who will participate in the Ideas Forum 2024: Zian Chen, Martin Germann, Esther Lu, and Wong Binghao. This project supports the fair's core goal of bringing art from Taiwan from across the spectrum—from those represented by the leading galleries participating in the fair to those working largely outside the market—to greater international attention and demonstrates the fair's ongoing interest in building partnerships with public and private organizations throughout Taiwan's vibrant art scene.

Taipei Dangdai 2024 is delighted to once again host leading global exhibitors in the fair halls, including David Zwirner, Eric Firestone Gallery, Galleria Continua, Perrotin, Tang Contemporary Art, and Tina Keng Gallery, reflecting the continued attraction from local, regional, and international galleries to engage with the local art ecosystem. With 57 of the participating galleries having a space in the Asia Pacific region, Taipei Dangdai continues its mission to provide an opportunity to experience the best of artistic production from throughout Asia, while showcasing international talent in Taipei. 

The upcoming iteration of the fair will also welcome 33 new participants, including Bowman Sculpture, Cuturi Gallery, FOUNDRY SEOUL, Jahn und Jahn, Praise Shadows Art Gallery, Polígrafa Obra Gráfica, The Columns Gallery, and more, which is a testament to the continued draw of the established collecting scene in the region. Additionally, the 2024 edition of Taipei Dangdai will include a top-tier line-up of Taiwan’s leading galleries, such as Each Modern, Liang Gallery, MICHAEL KU GALLERY, CHINI Gallery, and Da Xiang Art Space. 

Taipei Dangdai is thrilled to debut a new sector at the 2024 edition titled Evoke, showcasing solo or curated presentations by historically significant artists. Highlights of the sector include solo exhibitions by Liao Chi-chun at Ever Harvest Art Gallery and Hsiao Chin at 3812 Gallery, two important links in the evolution of modern and contemporary art in the middle of the twentieth century, and a two-person show at Marc Straus featuring works by Ozioma Onuzulike and Anne Samat, who both invoke their cultural heritage and also speak to the current-day global crisis of climate change. Furthermore, home-grown and international exhibitors will showcase their dynamic exhibitions of art across Galleries, the main sector for established galleries from Taiwan, Asia, and around the world; Engage, a sector dedicated to contemporary positions influenced by or in dialogue with the diverse aesthetic traditions of Asia; Edge, a sector to discover cutting edge emerging art; and Node, a series of large-scale and immersive installation works that go beyond the traditional art fair booth, returns to the fair halls as a special sector for large-scale and immersive works of art that go beyond what is possible in a typical art fair booth to play a placemaking role within the fair. This year, Node will be anchored by two large-scale sculptures in media related to artisanship and our material heritage. Tanabe Chikuunsai IV, presented by Yumekoubou, takes traditional Japanese basket weaving in a contemporary direction. Elsewhere in the fair, Julia Hung, presented by isart Gallery, works with textile weaving techniques to capture the flow of time in space. 

Additionally, the Ideas Forum will return this year to unite local and global industry experts to discuss how art exists in the past, present, and future, celebrating long-term patronage with art and ideas across disciplines and cultures. The Forum for 2024, "Collecting as Culture," will feature discussions on "Private Institutions in the Public Eye," "Making Antiques Contemporary," "Civics and Collections," and "A New Approach from a New Generation." This framework will be supplemented by a series of keynote talks by young collectors, curators, and media owners who will be participating in the fair. Shedding light on Taiwan's rich heritage of influential collections. In a new program introduced this year, the fair invites a selection of Cultural Partners active in Taiwan to present their artistic programs. Whether spotlighting their world-leading corporate art collections or introducing transgressive interventions by emerging artists from the local art scene, the Cultural Partners program represents integral components of the art infrastructure. Exhibiting partners include UBS Art Studio, CTBC Foundation for Arts and Culture, Hong Foundation and Jut Art Museum. 

At the core of Taiwan’s thriving art scene is a wealth of exceptional museums, cultural institutions, galleries, and significant private collections, and the city is home to one of the longest-standing biennials in Asia, the Taipei Biennial held by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. Coinciding with Taipei Dangdai, the city will host a diverse range of programming, which testifies to the dynamic and distinctive local cultural ecosystem. Exhibitions throughout the week will include the much-anticipated opening of the Renzo Piano-designed Fubon Art Museum in downtown Taipei’s Xinyi District, featuring “True Nature: Rodin and the Age of Impressionism.” Elsewhere, a major solo exhibition by renowned South African artist William Kentridge, held at Taipei Fine Arts Museum in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts, London, will mark the artist’s first large-scale solo exhibition in Taiwan. Additional shows on view in Taiwan during the fair will include a touring exhibition of masterpieces from the National Gallery, London – including paintings by artists such as Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Constable, Monet, and Van Gogh – at the CHIMEI Museum, Tainan;  the expansive photography exhibition “Civilization: The Way We Live Now,” which has been co-produced by the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, Minneapolis/New York/Paris/Lausanne, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Korea in collaboration with the Jut Art Museum, Taipei; and a solo exhibition of rising Taiwanese artist Musquiqui Chihying presented by Hong Foundation at  Taiwan Contemporary Culture  (C-LAB) in Taipei. 

Also debuting at the 2024 edition of the fair, Cafe Culture is a new lounge area within Taipei Dangdai featuring a large-scale map where visitors can learn more about the exhibitions on view at a wide selection of museums and other art institutions in Taipei and across Taiwan, such as Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts, Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, and Winsing Arts Foundation. Cafe Culture will also feature a selection of art by local children that is offered for sale by Little Art, with proceeds going to charity.

Debuting at the 2024 fair, Taipei Dangdai will offer a series of exclusive VIP Cultural Tours for collectors to immerse themselves in Asian art history, Taiwan’s renowned diverse culture and cuisine, and the breathtaking local natural landscapes. Offered in collaboration with CUYSINE, the experiences include Michelin-starred dining and cultural expeditions to historical and cultural landmarks across three destinations of Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung, providing opportunities for intimate encounters with the Taiwanese masters, from Ju Ming to Yu Peng, and their contributions to global art history. Taipei Platform will also return to the fair as a platform to collaborate with diverse independent cultural institutions and other partners, who invite visitors to participate in workshops, tours, and pop-up events. The program offers an expansive view of the local cultural ecosystem, and will this year partner with Artpartment, PAPERMATTER, PE Fine Art, Giloo, dmp projects, and Fotobook DUMMIES Day.

Highlights of the fair’s 2024 VIP Program include the opening of the 11th edition of Program X-site on the outdoor plaza of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, an annual open call for projects through various cutting-edge issues, and cross-disciplinary proposals of temporary installations. This year’s Program X-site has been awarded to office one senses (OOS), who will present “Analogue Forest”, including an exclusive performance at the opening for audiences to connect with the forest installation through their own senses. Additionally, the 2024 VIP Program will include a live performance event at the Hong Foundation, blending traditional instruments, ethnic music, and electronic sounds, to accompany a solo exhibition, “Ghost in The Sea” by Taiwanese artist Musquiqui Chihying. The Hong Foundation's event will be held at Taiwan Contemporary Culture (C-LAB).
