SculptureCenter Appoints Sohrab Mohebbi as Curator

SOHRAB MOHEBBI was announced curator of New York
On February 15, New York’s SculptureCenter announced the appointment of Sohrab Mohebbi as its curator. Mohebbi will officially take up the position on April 1. He succeeds Ruba Katrib, who left to join MoMA PS1 in October of 2017.
Upon the center’s announcement, executive director Mary Ceruti stated: “Sohrab brings great energy, intellect, and passion to his work with art and artists [. . .] His creative yet rigorous approach to exhibition-making, coupled with his collaborative spirit and international network, has distinguished him as an important curatorial voice. He is an engaged thinker who can position emerging ideas within a broader context and do so with clarity.”
Mohebbi arrives in New York from his post as associate curator at REDCAT Gallery in Los Angeles, where he has been for the past four years. During his time at REDCAT, he organized solo exhibitions with a range of practitioners such as installation artist Dave Hullfish Bailey, conceptualists Tamara Henderson and John Knight, as well as sculptor Falke Pisano, among many others. Previously, he was a curatorial fellow at New York’s Queens Museum and curatorial assistant at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Mohebbi also brings international experience to the Center, having organized exhibitions around the world, including at SALT in Istanbul, London’s Rodeo gallery and the Center for Historical Reenactments in Johannesburg.
In his position as SculptureCenter’s curator, Mohebbi will be responsible for organizing exhibitions, public programs and publications, highlighting sculpture’s specific potential as a medium. He will also be commissioning works by mid-career and emerging artists for the non-collecting museum.
