Singaporean artist and filmmaker Ho Tzu Nyen is one of ten winners of the 2024 Chanel Next Prize, announced Hong Kong-based Kiang Malingue Gallery on March 30. The biennial prize is part of the luxury fashion and cosmetics brand Chanel’s Culture Fund and aims to award artists “who are making a difference and redefining their disciplines,” said Yana Peel, the brand’s global head of arts and culture.
Established in 2021, the Next Prize aims to build on Chanel’s now century-long legacy of cultural patronage. The winners will receive USD 108,000 to realize their artistic projects, along with the opportunity to participate in a two-year mentorship and networking program facilitated by Chanel’s global cultural partners, such as London’s Royal College of Art.
Ho has worked on animation, video, performance and installation throughout his art career. He is known for blending the history of art and Southeast Asia, as well as literary and musical references, into his artistic practice. Some of his recent solo exhibitions include the critically acclaimed survey “Time & the Tiger” (2023) at the Singapore Art Museum, “Hammer Projects: Ho Tzu Nyen” (2022) at Los Angeles’s Hammer Museum, and “Voice of Void” (2021) at Yamaguchi Centre for Arts and Media in Japan. This month, Ho Tzu Nyen plans to present “A for Agents,” a solo exhibition of six film-based installations and a new work, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, which will run from April 6 until July 7, 2024.
