Finalists for Hugo Boss Asia Art Award Announced

On March 27, Shanghai’s Rockbund Art Museum (RAM) and fashion brand Hugo Boss named video artist Hao Jingban; choreographer and visual artist Eisa Jocson; animator and video artist Hsu Che-Yu; and multimedia artist Phan Thao Nguyen as the finalists for the 2019 Hugo Boss Asia Art Award. The winner, to be announced in November, will receive RMB 300,000 (USD 44,600).
The finalists were chosen by a panel comprising RAM director Larys Frogier; artistic director of the Singapore Biennale, Patrick D. Flores; Gridthiya Gaweewong, artistic director of Bangkok’s Jim Thompson Art Center; Gwangju Biennale Foundation president Sunjung Kim; Carol Yinghua Lu, director of Beijing’s Inside-Out Art Museum; and artist Cao Fei.
Frogier remarked: “The finalist artists brilliantly contribute to the qualitative diversity of contemporary art practices in Asia, revisiting the formats of performance and choreography to question social codes and gender identities, embracing video, painting and installation to remake historical and current narratives.”
Previous winners of the biennial prize include Chinese multimedia artist Li Ming; Manila-based artist Maria Taniguchi; and Hong Kong multidisciplinary artist Kwan Sheung Chi.
The Hugo Boss Asia Art Award finalists’ exhibition will open at RAM on October 18, and will be on view until December 15.
