Documenta Releases 2022 Artist List

Asphalt

On October 1, ruangrupa, the Indonesian art collective and the curators of documenta fifteen, revealed the participants for the 2022 edition of the quinquennial in Kassel. The announcement was first published on a German street magazine called Asphalt, which is sold in the area of Kassel, Hanover, Göttingen, and other cities in Lower Saxony and Hesse to support the poor and homeless communities.

To emphasize solidarity, collectivity, and fair distribution under the concept of lumbung, which means “communal rice barn” in Indonesian, ruangrupa grouped the 54 participating artists and collectives into small council-like groups called “mini-majelis.” According to Asphalt, artists of the same group have already started collaborating. Instead of their nationalities, participants were listed according to their working time zones. Among the artists and collectives on the list include interdisciplinary group Black Quantum Futurism, independent nonprofit Asia Art Archive, American sculptor Jimmie Durham, and multidisciplinary artist group The Nest Collective.

Scheduled for June 18–September 25, 2022, documenta fifteen will include major exhibition venues such as the public Fridericianum museum; ruruHaus, a building specifically transformed for the festival; and the theater building Ottoneum, which is currently the Museum of Natural History in Kassel; among others.

documental fifteen also provides the public with an option to buy a “solidarity ticket,” which provides free admission for another person to visit the quinquennial. The total amount of the solidarity tickets will depend on the number of buyers, and will be available at the points of sale during the exhibition.
