On October 31, the Biennale of Sydney announced its lineup of artists, venues, and first wave of programs ahead of its 24th edition. Citywide venues, including Art Gallery of New South Wales, Artspace, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia—alongside Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney and the recently reinstated White Bay Power Station—will join forces under the artistic direction of curators Cosmin Costinaș and Inti Guerrero. Titled “Ten Thousand Suns,” the 2024 Biennale, which coincides with its Golden Anniversary, will explore "the atomic era, a concentrated time of climate alteration through human exploitation, within the context of today's moment of climate emergency and a refusal to concede to an apocalyptic vision of the future."

The festival has selected 88 artists and collectives from 47 countries, including filmmaker Andrew Thomas Huang, Pacific and Maori collective Pacific Sisters, the late painter Martin Wong, queer Japanese artist Maru Yacco, and Malaysian textile-based artist Anne Samat. A host of Australian artists, including painter Gordon Hookey, indigenous photographer and filmmaker Tracey Moffatt, multidisciplinary artist Serwah Attafuah, and photographer and writer William Yang, will also be represented.

Meanwhile, as a Visionary Partner the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain has commissioned 14 First Nations artists to create new works. Mangala Bai Maravi of India’s Baiga tribe, Manyjilyjarra painter Doreen Chapman, Quandamooka artist Megan Cope, among others, will work with First Nations Curatorial Fellow Tony Albert to realize their projects. In a statement, Costinaș and Guerrero said that the Biennale “conveys the joy of cultural multiplicities affirmed, of First Nations understandings of the cosmos brought to the fore.” The Biennale of Sydney runs from March 9 to June 10, 2024.
