One on One: Rao Fu on Caspar David Friedrich
By Rao Fu
One of the most profound influences on my work has been the prominent German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich, who, during his lifetime, elevated Dresden Romanticism to new heights. His paintings are imbued with a brooding darkness and a cold, misanthropic transcendence; his sceneries contain certain moods and emotions. Whenever I look at one of his paintings, I re-examine the relationship between myself and the natural world. Through his vast and awe-inspiring landscapes we might get a better sense of the power that lies beyond the individual. This is what is known as “the sublime.”
