“Reimagine: Himalayan Art Now” was splashy, sprawling, and bittersweet given that it marked the final exhibition hosted by the Rubin Museum of Art in New York. After two decades the institution will shut its doors and reincarnate as a virtual entity under a “global museum model.” The closing exhibition displayed highlights of its collection paired with works by 32 contemporary artists with Himalayan roots, celebrating impermanence through a forward-looking gesture reminiscent of rebirth.
