A devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria in the early morning of February 6, followed by another 7.5-magnitude quake nine hours later. The twin quakes, followed by more than 2,000 aftershocks, destroyed tens of thousands of buildings, killing more than 50,000 people, according to a United Nations estimate, and caused more than 200,000 injuries across the region. Millions of people have been displaced from their homes including thousands of Syrian refugees living in Turkey.
