Documenta Artists Resist Censorship

After the removal of Indonesian collective Taring Padi’s mural People’s Justice (2002) from Friedrichsplatz on June 22 due to two antisemitic caricatures within the painting decrying foreign military involvement in Indonesia’s 1965–66 mass-killings, scrutiny of Documenta’s participants ramped up. In several still-unexplained instances from June, Documenta closed several venues with artworks about Palestinian history without informing the artists or artistic team.
