Covid-19 has necessitated overhauls in the way that arts platforms organize their time and spaces. Among the first major international events to be impacted was Art Basel Hong Kong. Gallerists began to pressure the fair to cancel in late January as cases surged in China and beyond. When Art Basel officially aborted the event on February 6—one week after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a global health emergency—promising a 75 percent refund for galleries, the decision was welcomed. Bo Young Song, director of Seoul’s Kukje Gallery, told AAP: “We fully respect and concur with the committee’s decision . . . especially when prioritizing the health and safety of all those [who] will be present at the fair.” At the time, the WHO had reported over 28,000 recorded global cases.
