Last July, followers of Ho Chi Minh City’s art scene struggled to book tickets to “Timeless Souls: Beyond the Voyage” (2022), Sotheby’s first noncommercial exhibition in Vietnam.  Demand was especially high as locals were eager to see works by Le Thi Luu (1911–1988), Le Pho (1907–2001), Mai Trung Thu (1906–1980), and Vu Cao Dam (1908–2000), masters of the L’Ecole Des Beaux Arts de L’Indochine whose names have been mythologized in the national psyche and whose works have achieved record-breaking sums at international auctions in recent years.
