How can nature’s complex phenomena, or a cultural history, be translated into an auditory experience? Guangzhou-born multimedia artist and composer mafmadmaf (aka “maf”) makes a dynamic attempt. Melding his interests in biology, design, and music into experimental sound and performance, maf draws inspiration from ecology and meteorology, as well as the culture and geography of his hometown. Often intersecting with visual arts, his sonic archive includes examples of minimal soundscapes and abstracted field recordings, employing feedback loops and modular synthesizers to warp sound into elaborate distortions.
